I was given a tour of the public hospital here, Queen II.  It is so much worse than I ever imagined.  A pediatrician from Baylor gave us the tour.  I cannot begin to accurately describe how horrible the wards are.  I only saw the pediatric part, but it was terrible!  It was dirty and had no equipment.  The main causes of death are respiratory disease, malnutrition, and diarrheal disease.  The doctor told us that you kind of just accept the fact that almost half of the patients will die. “Every now and then one kid will pull through.” That is what keeps him fighting every day.  They don’t have ventilators for the kids and oxygen tanks have to be shared.  When it is warmer, cockroaches are found everywhere.  It made me sick, angry, and sad.
