We have concluded part one of Camp Challenge! On Thursday we played a Jeopardy review game to help them study for their test on Friday. They had never played before, so it was quite a loud and exciting game! In groups of four or five, they worked together to answer each question, and I was quite impressed by their performance because several groups scored very close to each other by the end of it. Our students took a test on the problem-solving model the next day, and they all performed very well. Many of them improved a great deal since the first pretest that we administered on the first day of class. After the test, we gave them a break from teaching and taught them how to make anagrams with their names. Instead of writing an adjective for each letter of their name, quite a few of the students made a sentence with each word beginning with a letter in their name. Although, some of the sentences did not make too much sense grammatically, it was a creative effort on their part, and all of them enjoyed the activity.

After school on Thursday I went with Beth to the Eloihim Health Center near our lodge. It is a very small one room clinic run by a registered nurse named Rebecca. She sees a varying number of patients each day and treats many different diseases and symptoms. During our time there, we saw one patient who recently felt heart palpitations and a sharp pain that radiated to her back. Rebecca allowed us to consult with the patient and ask her questions about her symptoms in order to figure out how to treat her. It was very challenging because I had never done anything like it before but a very worthwhile learning experience. I’m excited to volunteer more with her in the future!

On Saturday, we had an intern reunion as all the Lesotho interns met up in Maseru at the culture fair in the Basotho hat tourism center. We walked around looking at little trinkets and crafts that local Basothos made. Each of us came away with at least two or three souvenirs to take home. We also ate at Regal Restaurant which serves amazing Indian food. It was good time of catching up with each other and talking about adventures we’ve had at our internship sites.
